Dr. Bjarne Olesen, MSc.

Director, Professor, International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy Technical University of Denmark.

Dr. Bjarne W. Olesen obtained an MS in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark in 1972, and a Ph.D. at the Laboratory of Heating and Air Conditioning, Technical University of Denmark in 1975. In 1982, he received the Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award, and in 1997, the Distinguish Service Award from ASHRAE.

In 1997, he received the ANSI Meritorious Service Award from American National Standard Institute. In 2001 he became an ASHRAE Fellow. In 2000 he was appointed as member of the international faculty and adjunct professor at the Technical University of Denmark.

Dr. Olesen was employed as a research scientist at the Laboratory of Heating and Air Conditioning, Technical University of Denmark, from 1972-90. He performed research on the influence of the thermal environment on human beings (floor temperatures, draught, vertical air temperature differences, radiant temperature asymmetry, spot cooling, thermal insulation of clothing, measurements of the thermal environment).

In 1978-1992, he worked part time as product manager at Brüel & Kjaer in planning, development and marketing of instruments for measuring and evaluation of the thermal environment, indoor air quality and the performance of the ventilation system (tracer gas measurements).

In 1992-1993, he was Senior Research Scientist, Indoor Environment Program, College of Architecture and Urban Studies, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA. He performed research on indoor air quality and ventilation in buildings, laboratory testing of displacement ventilation system, teaching in calculation of heating and cooling loads, design criteria for the indoor environment and HVAC systems in buildings.

Dr. Olesen is chairing or serves as a member of several ISO, CEN, ASHRAE and DIN standards committees related to thermal environment, indoor-air quality, ventilation and heating and cooling systems in buildings. He has published approximately 240 papers.

Doug King is a consulting engineer, specialising in the application of building physics to the design of low environmental impact buildings. He is principal of multi-award winning practice King Shaw Associates and Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor of Building Physics.

Doug is consistently involved in designing buildings that re-define environmental standards, including: Sainsbury's Greenwich; the Weald and Downland Gridshell; the new Rolls Royce Factory; the Genzyme Centre in Boston, the largest LEED Platinum building in the world, and the Innovate Green Office, the highest BREEAM scoring building ever.

Doug is deeply involved in education for innovation in the construction industry. He was author of "Engineering a Low Carbon Built Environment", a major report for Royal Academy of Engineering, and writes widely for the press. He makes regular TV appearances in addition to speaking at conferences, but is perhaps best know for introducing the term Eco-Bling into the national consciousness.

He holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering and has more than 20 years of experience of business development, R&D and product development in the fields of radiant heating and cooling, low energy buildings and renewable energy forms.

Ilari is the Deputy Chairman of Green Building Council Finland, Executive Committee Member of the European Construction Technology Platform, and has also served as President of EnR (the European Energy Network), President and Board Member of iiSBE (International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment) and an Alternate Board Member in ECEEE (European Council for an Energy Efficient Economy).

As Principal Engineer, Wafaa is in her seventh year with velta, and leads the design team with specific involvement in special projects and TABS applications.

Wafaa studied and trained in the Lebanon completing a Masters Degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering progressing to Chartered status.

Working in Beirut as an Electrical Engineer/Project Manager, she gained extensive experience of Building Management Systems, working on many prestigious projects including the Marriott Hotel, Beirut and the American University Hospital, Beirut.

Moving to the UK she then completed a Post Graduate Masters in Building Services Engineering at Brunel University, broadening her knowledge of the industry.

For the last seven years Wafaa has studied and developed her experience with velta TABS and now provides strategic knowledge and experience on a wide variety of projects, and is a leading engineer in thermally-active building systems (TABS), having worked with many clients on both UK and overseas applications.

Recently returning to the UK after spending two years in the Middle East, providing clients with a consultancy on TABS projects, Wafaa has established an excellent reputation with clients for the ability to solve complex design issues and work closely with their design teams.

David has almost 25 years experience in the construction industry having fulfilled the role of Project, Construction and Site Manager on a number of high value prestigious contracts. His early involvement in 2 stage Design & Build projects has enabled David to fully understand the pre-construction design and procurement phases and how this intergrates with the construction process.

In 2008, David led the McAlpine team through the 38 week preconstruction period of Manchester Metropolitan University's New Business School & Student Hub. The project, worth £50 million, saw David successfully assisting the consultants in completing their design and concluding the second stage procurement of the various trade packages. He initiated with the Client an early enabling works contract to de-risk the site and continues to lead the team through the high quality build process on site.

Gerry started his working life in construction as a building surveyor, he then went on to run his own business. Over the past 23 years he has worked for several major precast concrete manufacturers in a technical and commercial capacity and for the last 17 years has worked as Commercial Director then Managing Director of the present division concentrating on precast concrete products and building systems.

He has been involved in a broad range of product development during that time establishing them with successful market positions. He is an active member of several product associations and is Chairman of the Structural Precast Association.

Gerry led the product development team that constructed two unique houses on the BRE Innovation Park at Watford the latest of which was the first masonry house to be constructed to the requirements of the Code for Sustainable Homes achieving Level 4 of the code.

Holmer joined the company more than 11 years ago leading Uponor to its state of the art knowledge in TABS.

He holds a master degree in mechanical engineering with an ecological award for his master thesis in solar-heating supply.

During his career as Product Manager for Heating and Cooling, Holmer gained valuable experience managing many significant projects one of them being the largest project with radiant cooling - the SBIA (Airport) project in Bangkok - in which the Uponor Velta floor cooling system covers an area of 150,000 square metres.

In 2008 Holmer was then appointed Manager for Engineering and Special Projects within the Uponor European Indoor Climate Business Group.

One of the main responsibilities of his team is to provide Uponor's European sales and marketing units with a consultancy on implementing challenging projects and developing the competencies in this field. His passion and excellent knowledge facilitates to maintain and expand a network for technical experts.

He then led the design for a new City Academy in Paddington and most recently has been overseeing the design of a new Business School and Student Hub for Manchester Metropolitan University. Simon was made Partner in 2007 and was appointed to the practice's Partnership Board in 2008.

He commenced his financial career in the field of electronics; and has worked in various industries including; meat processing, aerospace and construction for a number of the largest companies in Northern Ireland.

Neil spent five years with the Lagan Group, Belfast as accountant and then Finance Director of the Materials Supply and Contracting Divisions. In 2006 Neil joined Creagh Concrete as Company Finance Director; his extensive financial experience has moved Creagh to a position of financial stability providing security for long term sustainability and growth. Neil is currently responsible for a number of key innovation projects including; set up of Creagh Energy; a specialised division of the company focused on offering renewable energy technologies UK wide and launch of ClimaSPAN an energy efficient precast flooring system with heating and cooling properties. Neil is married to Shona and has 3 children, he lives in County Antrim.
